In the 1940s, filtration of varnishes and paints still relied on nylon pantyhose. Bernd Schwegmann found himself unhappy with the results of such filtration because the material’s highly elastic meshes expanded during use. He started looking for a finer filter material and discovered sieve cloth, which had been used in screen printing and was easy to process. Crucially, its mesh did not expand when pulled. It was Bernd Schwegmann’s wife Ursula who created the first sieve bag from this material in their own living room. The Schwegmann sieve bag was born.
Today, we are still using the same material to produce our sieve bags, choosing the right filter medium based on our customers’ requirements regarding temperatures or the chemical composition of the liquids used. Would you believe that even today, some companies still use pantyhose for filtration? It’s a fact that keeps surprising us.
As one of his essential business principles, Bernd Schwegmann always placed great importance on quality. Today, we still honour these principles, and our in-house sewing plant in Rhineland-Palatinate is dedicated to quality, sustainability and functionality.
Our custom-tailored sieve bags are ideally suited for use in filtration systems where no filter housing is available or as a cost-effective way of adapting filtration units. They can easily be integrated into existing production processes in a number of different ways. We offer a range of low-silicone and food-safe materials (polyamide, polyester and polypropylene) in over 25 different mesh sizes (from 1 µm to 2,000 µm).
